Sir Alex Ferguson says Manchester United will cope without Cristiano Ronaldo this season.

Ronaldo was the jewel in United's crown as they wrapped up three consecutive Premier League titles and conquered Europe as well.

But he flew the nest for Real Madrid earlier this summer in a world-record £80million deal.

United have not spent big in a bid to replace his goals and creative talents, but Ferguson insists they'll still be a force to be reckoned with.

Talking after Sunday's Premier League win over Birmingham, he said: "I know some of our supporters are still worried that I have not bought a megastar to replace Cristiano.

"They are concerned because they can't quite work out how we are going to compensate for all the goals Cristiano used to get for us.

"But I am more than happy with our squad and although we have lost a major player, I believe we are on the threshold of a very exciting era for Manchester United."

Ferguson saw Wayne Rooney net the winner against Birmingham, and expects the England striker to provide plenty more goals in the coming months.

"If you have two or three strikers who can get you 20 it stands you in good stead." said Ferguson.

"Wayne Rooney is well capable of that."

United new boy Michael Owen made his Premier League debut for the club as a late substitute, and missed a golden opportunity to crown it with a goal.

"Owen made a great run and the keeper made a great save. But he will get his goals, no question about that," said Ferguson.

"I started with Rooney and Berbatov today quite simply because they were at the club last season and were regular players and you've got to give them an opportunity.

"Michael will get his chances. There is no question about that. There are plenty of games coming up in the next few weeks to give him his opportunity and he will take them."
